Transitional Housing

Keep praying for the Transitional Housing program as work is begun on developing the new site. There's also a "presentation letter" available. Ask Roger or Lee for a copy. This letter will be used in introducing the site to community businesses, churches and individuals to raise funding.

Be Prepared

These are uncertain times as far as the politics and commerce of men. It's common sense to prepare for the unexpected. That may be closer than we think. Putting away some staples, and fuel, and water is a good idea. We've already experienced shortages, but this does not affect our faith. The wisdom of God helps us believe, trust and prepare without fear.

(Matt.6.25-34; James 1.5-8).

Christmas pageant meeting after church today. Meeting with Kate Hilton for those who are to participate. We need you.

Advent

Advent means "the appearing." It's the season of preparation for the coming of the Lord Jesus in the manger at Bethlehem. We remember the four Sundays before Christmas with an Advent wreath and five candles. The Advent wreath originated from an 1839 initiative by Johann Himrich Wichern, a Protestant Pastor in Germany. There are three violet candles for hope, faith and peace, and there's one pink candle for joy. The white candle in the middle is the "Jesus" candle. The wreath represents the crown of our Christ, and the evergreen is everlasting life.

Soup and Bread Potluck

That's right. Today, after church is our annual Soup and Bread Potluck. Since the big meal on Thursday, it's time to do the simple thing. Although, it's impressive to see how creative NHCF people are in making soup and bread into spectacular presentations! Stick around and be astounded.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a treasured American holiday being celebrated here informally and formally ever since our Pilgrim forefathers had that first harvest feast in 1621. It was P resident Abraham Lincoln who proclaimed the holiday for our nation in 1863 in the midst of our Civil War.

Thanksgiving is a good thing in itself and as a holiday. Paul writes to the Thessalonians, "In everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus" (1 Thess.5.18). Everything? Yes, and that's hard for us m ortals to understand. Yet, since we know that God works all things for good, we need to keep focused on His goodness, not the travail of this life (Rom.8.28; Heb.12.2). For "the joy of the Lord is our strength" (Neh.8.10).

So important is thanks giving that Paul makes it part of our prayer life, writing, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God" (Phil.4.6). Can we do this? Is it within our power to continually of fer up thanks to God? Well, no...it isn't. It's only by the power and presence of His Holy Spirit that we can be thankful.

Let us not speak words of judgment and hatred; let us not dwell on the unfair, deceitful things of this life. Let them sta y with their father the devil. Rather, let us give thanks to God and take joy in His great salvation, freely given to us. "Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift"

(2 Cor.9.15)!
